China is without a doubt the fastest developing country in the world. Probably 50% of what you see around you (if you are sitting in front of a computer in a library, at home or at work) is made in China. Furthermore China has a continuously growing population and it is estimated that by 2020 this Asian country will demand 70% of the world’s resources like paper and cotton. If you think about it, China has the capacity to become the most powerful country in the world.

But behind this fast economic growth, there is something going on that is usually neglected by the media, businessmen and politicians alike, something that is worth talking about, something so significant that every human being should be aware of it. I am talking about the growing inequality in China, the heavy pollution and the fact that the bigger percentage of Chinese people live with less than a pound a day, surrounded by waste and toxic gases. I have recently watched a documentary about a Chinese village where most of the men used to be fishermen and were able to feed their families without worrying about tomorrow. Today all their fishing places are polluted, even the huge river passing through the village is not filled with fish, but with plastic bottles, dirt and all kinds of dangerous and poisonous things. And when most Chinese live in poverty, thousands of businessmen spend their huge fortunes buying private planes, luxurious houses and expensive designer clothing. They don’t care that their fortunes are at the expense of the misery of their countryman. I am sure that they employ hundreds of thousands of people without worrying about social benefits, how to help them develop their skills, how to improve their working conditions, they probably don’t even have an integrated human resources software to keep track of the many miserable souls who get sick or even die because of the unbearable working conditions. They simply don’t care. This is what I call dirty money.

In the current economic climate, pressed by financial developments not dependent on their vote and pressured by the circumstances arising in banks and not the streets, people are getting more and more skeptic about capitalism and its mutation that led to the ’perverse'condition of the financial system today. Places such as London, New York, Sydney, Frankfurt and Paris became centers of discomfort and places for people to actually express their concerns about the condition of the world market.

The most serious protests took place in New York, the USA. There is still unrest and there are still large format printing materials calling for people to reconsider their values. The protests were the so called ’Wall Street Protests'and were intended to show the state and the private organizations that it is the people that matter and not only the financial world. Capitalism, according to many, has led to the expansion of values which should not have been incorporated by the money making machines of the modern day business. The protests were suppressed by the police, and the media said ’only a few people'were out on the streets. As you can observer on the image above, thousands of people actually took part in the anti -capitalist demonstrations.

The same social class went on the streets on another major world financial centre - London. People gathered and are still occupying the space in front of St Paul’s cathedral in Central London. Interestingly, thousands of young people support the anti capitalist movement and trends - realizing that the financial disturbances during the last years have inevitably influenced their lives, people are looking forward to a more stable and more secure future.

Major protests were also held in other financial capitals in the world. Additionally, the support for such protesters have been circulating over the web and thousands of people have expressed their sympathy with the protesters in London and NY.

Today, the 13th August 2011, is the day we mark a dark anniversary - fifty years ago, on this date, the Berlin Wall was completed and the separation of Germany was a fact. Berlin is today full of people enjoying their unity and safety, but it is also full of people placing flowers of what remains a wreck in the middle of the city. Because of both people, a day of recalling the events around the Berlin Wall is important - and again because of them the value of the world peace is what needs to be constantly remembered.

Berlin wall divided Germans for generations. Today a separation is still observable - Eastern Germany is still marked by the signs of social dominance while the West remains happily developing. The Economist magazine points out that despite being one country, the communism regime had shaped the Germans from the east as individuals who would need to undergo another five decade assimilation into the world of modern democracy.

No matter whether such claims generate any truth, today is a remembrance of what peace used to mean before - it used to be a definition of super powers to cover their power behind peaceful purposes. Today, the situation might be rather different but the same motives can be observed - the wall nowadays separates Eastern and Western Europe once again. The first are rapidly struggling to escape financial difficulties while the latter are quite happy to be among the most developed countries in the world.
And while today many would seek to find advice on accidents at work compensation schemes and not even see that it is the date when one of the greatest monstrosities in Europe was completed, others would place flowers over the remainings of the Berlin Wall hoping that this time peace would last for longer.

That concerns me a little. It makes me question what kind of a world we live in when surprise isn’t something that even occurs any more…

The story was about rapes in South Africa, the so-called ’corrective rapes’, to be precise.

Today, I came across an article on the BBC News website which didn’t surprise me at all. That, in itself, shocked me to some extent. I knew what my reaction meant: it meant, in no uncertain terms, that I had come to expect seeing such horrors as an every day thing. That concerns me a little. It makes me question what kind of a world we live in when surprise isn’t something that even occurs any more…

The story was about rapes in South Africa, the so-called ’corrective rapes’, to be precise. Now, stories of this nature, as we all know, are nothing new; Africa has long been dogged with the reputation of money ending up in the wrong hands and the people being used as pawns in a global game which all the other countries frequently capitalise on. But what was new about this story was the scale of it all, which seemed surprising, even by Africa’s standards; according to the information the piece conveyed, lesbians are being persecuted by the thousands over there as we speak. Not just persecuted but raped, beaten and routinely killed. And the police are nowhere in plain sight. In many cases they are — allegedly — in on it. This is the kind of terrible situation that the country is in and it shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

According to the source of the story, these heinous acts are being committed by men who are doing this to ’convert'the women to the right sexuality. And this isn’t something any of the men are scared to speak publicly about. Indeed, more worryingly, this is an opinion which runs through the veins of the country: that homosexuality is wrong in God’s eyes, and anything against homosexuals, violent or otherwise, is deemed absolutely OK.

There has, as you might expect, been a huge backlash against this already. Many comments have been left on the page of the article, and there has been a huge global campaign underway for a while to get the atrocities to stop.

Where it will end is a good question, but one thing is for sure: other nations can’t just stand with crossed arms and watch the blood shed. Everyone from Occupational Therapy Jobs to police officers will have to start waking up to the fact that the only thing that will get this to stop is direct action.

It is no surprise that the EU is developing a serious financial fever that might let it down in the future. Greece is falling apart and unfortunately it is pulling the whole Euro zone back. But this is not the only problem, the lack of some serious regulatory measures allow abuse of Union law and thus countries from the Eastern European region continue the abuse of financial means granted to them in strategies developed by the Union institutions.

To be equal, peoples need to be treated in a similar ways. However, this seems to be the wrong position according to the Union. The institutions still treat differently different Member States. Little has been done for the integration of countries like Bulgaria and Romania. The two states suffer from economic deficit and what they need is economic support. However, the what the Union does is pour production in these countries that replace their own on the domestic market. Thus people that produce in the country cannot sell their goods. This is the reason why the goods freedom needs to be controlled in favor of markets with more serious financial problems.

Furthermore, the distribution and allocation of funds in the Union is uneven. It is true that some states need more years of participation in the Community if the want to be treated in a better way. However, while in countries such as Germany even the tiniest part time Teaching assistant jobs are quite well paid and many EU programs operate in their favor, high positions such as lawyers are still underestimated in Eastern Europe and people need private businesses if they want to progress in life.
So the conclusion is hard to chew but easy to comprehend - the problems with the EU are inequality and uneven treatment of actors. Huge players like Germany and France still continue to determine the future of smaller and less powerful states that need desperate attention and financial support.

What I think is interesting in the difference in how the United States government decided to not publish certain images that would inflame emotions and how the BBC has published a direct quote from the leaders of Al Qaeda which will serve to utilize the BBC to spread a message of vengeance around the world. By publishing direct quotations that call for vengeance the BBC knowingly or unwittingly serves as a distribution network for the terrorist message. Obama on the other hand said that the voice of dissent for the Islamic world is now coming from Tahrir Square and not terrorists. For more than a decade there was a collusion between fundamentalist imams and repressive regimes to direct the anger of the disenfranchised towards the United States and not towards the autocratic regimes. Obviously, the west has supported these autocratic and repressive regimes to secure the supply of oil, but that phase of foreign policy came to an end with the historic speech that Obama made in Cairo towards the beginning of his presidency. The popular uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya are far from over, but hopefully they were mean a new age of democracy and freedom in the middle east.

Whoever claims that the deprivation of life is a justified approach to dealing with individuals, might have lost a certain sense of humanity. However, we, as socially responsible individuals and as people capable of realizing the good and bad features of a legal system, are well aware that human rights protection is what we all rely upon in different situations - when having an immigration dna test, when signing an employment contract and even when peaking into the neighbor’s house. Then how can their gross violation be justified in a fact of taking a life away.

True, a justification is that a murder, who took life, deserves to be treated the same way. But this is a rather emotional approach to the matter. If you need to punish someone, you do not simply kill him, you do not even have to change him - you can simply take away his liberty. Being locked up is worse than dieing - the reason is a psychological because being unable to exercise yourself as an individuals leads to the assumption of a pointless life.

This is the main reason why the imposition of liabilities such as 230 years of prison is more reasonable than the electric chair. People with more serious crimes than murder, because such exists, need not be treated differently. A punishment enough is a deprivation of liberty. However, taking life away is messing up with another type of laws - the laws of proclaiming power over the significance of human life. If a country kills for a killing, this means it would respond to a provocation with a provocation. Where is the personal peace going then, and what would be the aspirations of such a country as the majority of people fear to commit a crime not because they will harm but because they will die?

In the news today was the sudden decision by Japan to cease chasing whales around the Antarctic with harpoons. This came as a very welcome surprise to animal rights campaigners and green groups, whose general hobby horse it has been to wage war on whalers (often at the expense of other, less famous green issues). The Sea Shepherd Conservation society are a well meaning but misguided organisation which has been bothering whaling vessels for years, occasionally getting rammed or squirted with water cannon and then whingeing about it very loudly.

Japan maintains that nothing has been decided yet and that the lull in the whale hunt is a temporary measure while safety measures are addressed. Presumably, the safety measures they need to address hinge largely on the swarm of boats that get in the way every time they try to kill a whale.

The Japanese hunt whales semi-legally using licences intended for research. A lot of the whale end up in restaurants and supermarkets nevertheless. Norway continues to hunt whales without even pretending to be doing it for research, and whale meat is freely available there. Another thing that is freely available in Norway is CFD trading, such as the type offered by Galvan Research and Trading. Like whale meat, this type of high-risk investment is banned in some parts of the world, including the USA.

The whale news comes at a time when a magician in China has been criticised for making goldfish perform in formation. Opponents say he might be harming the fish using magnets, but he adamantly replied: “If I used magnets my fish would stick together”.

Climate change is already ravaging the world. In Australia it is causing droughts to continue for much longer than usual — that’s the global warming thing that you’ve heard so much about, but now it’s much better to refer to it as climate change because although the earth is being caused to get warmer this, due to various currents like the Gulf Stream, will actually have the effect of making some parts of the world colder. It’s best to think about it as global weirding. And don’t think that it will simply mean that summers will be warmer. It will raise the price of food — since crops will be tougher to grow when farmers don’t know when the time is right to plant seeds — and it will increase the number of natural disasters. Scientists predict that a warmer Caribbean sea will make the worst hurricanes even more volatile and stronger.

This of course has an effect on everyone. People, like the people in Pakistan, will be displaced by these terrible disasters, made worse by climate change. Food price increases will further cause people in all countries of the world to increasingly ask their government to do something in order for a difference to be made. We can’t just go on as normal, and we definitely can’t just keeping buying clothes and visiting furniture shops because even cotton and the forest where oak cabinets come from are threatened. But worst of all, climate change could cause wars. We can make a difference if we start today.

The USA is currently, along with Russia, claimed to be working in cooperation for the reduction of the number of nuclear weapons it has at its disposal. The armament of the country during the Cold War is about to be reduced and the war heads to be destroyed as agreed between the Russian Federation and the States. The other two important nuclear players - France and the UK have already agreed under the Treaty and have enforced it.
The new terms of the treaty would be accepted in the domestic US law by the Parliament and is expected to take effect from the beginning of 2011. Still the response of Russia is awaited, but as their president Medvedev has announced, he is extremely happy with the decision of the USA decision-makers and said that the Russian Parliament would be working towards ratification as soon as possible too. The Treaty was concluded after the end of the Cold War and the fall of communism and its main objective is the preservation of peace and the avoidance of the use of nuclear weapons as their devastating impact on the people would leave many incapabilities in a case of a war conflict.
Still the USA, Russia and France and the UK remain the main players on the nuclear weapons stage. And while many other countries, that claim to be developing biodiesel storage tanks and technologies actually develop an independent nuclear weapons facilities, these nations are at least making an effort to reduce the danger from eventual radiation in a war conflict. However, countries like Pakistan, North Korea and Iran continue to develop military technologies and the probably involvement of nuclear power disturbs the world. These states have not entered or ratified any of the agreements for nuclear disarmament and still remain a potential threat to global security and peace.
